Beyond the right-hand edge line, are you allowed to drive?
Signage: Road markings
Explanation
Right edge line: do not drive on it or on the hard shoulder
- The right edge line (or shoulder line) marks the limit of the carriageway. From there, the hard shoulder begins, an area not intended for normal traffic.
- It is prohibited to drive on the line or on the hard shoulder.
- The hard shoulder is reserved for emergency stops, pedestrians when there is no pavement, and special vehicles under specific conditions.
- Regularly encroaching on this area reduces safety and constitutes an offence subject to penalties.
