Does this sign prohibit you from continuing to drive if you do not have snow chains?
Signage: Vertical signs
Explanation
Obligation to use snow chains
The **R-412 Snow chains** sign indicates the **obligation** not to continue driving **if the vehicle is not equipped with**:
- **Snow chains** or other **authorised anti-skid devices**, fitted **to at least one driving wheel on each side of the same drive axle**, or
- **Special snow tyres**.
That is, in the area where this sign applies, you may only drive if **one of these two conditions** is met:
1. Fitting chains or other anti-skid devices to **one driving wheel on each side** of the driven axle, or
2. Using **special snow tyres** (for example, winter or contact tyres).
When using **studded tyres** for ice:
- The **edges of the studs** must be **rounded**.
- The studs **may not protrude more than 2 mm** from the tyre surface.
In the presence of ice or snow, when the use of these devices is **mandatory or recommended**, **sufficient grip** must always be ensured by means of chains, other authorised anti-skid devices, or special tyres.
